    The Office of Justice Program’s Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) announced today the launch of the National Mentoring Resource Center. OJJDP established the Center to support effective youth mentoring programs and healthy youth development.

  • 20 Years Strong! Two Exciting Transitions at MPM

    The Mentoring Partnership of Minnesota (MPM) is excited to announce not one, but TWO exciting transitions. After 20 years of service as MPM’s founding Executive Director, Joellen Gonder-Spacek will be providing leadership to the mentoring field on the national level as the Senior Director of Partnerships for MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership. MPM Associate Director, Mai-Anh Kapanke, has been selected to serve as the organization’s new executive director. Mai-Anh has been with the organization for nine years and served as the VP of Marketing and Public Policy in 2006 and was promoted to associate director in 2010.

  • Young People Link Mentoring to Significant Life Outcomes: First-of-its-Kind Survey of Young People Correlates Mentoring Relationships with Positive Aspirations and Outcomes, Identifies Gap for Those Who Could Benefit Most

    Young people experience significant positive life outcomes related to academics, community involvement and leadership, and career development when they are mentored, according to a new report released today. The Mentoring Effect: Young People’s Perspectives on the Outcomes and Availability of Mentoring, the first-ever nationally representative survey of young people on the topic of mentoring, examines the mentoring effect on youth, their aspirations and achievements and the community around them; however, it also highlights a substantial mentoring gap that exists in America, especially for at-risk youth.

  • Mentoring Gender Gap: Minnesota Needs More Male Mentors - Mentoring Partnership of Minnesota Releases New Data from “State of Mentoring” Study

    More than $7.5 million is the total value of time given by mentors in Minnesota, yet 250,000 youth throughout the state are in great need of an adult mentor in their lives. The most common reason for youth to be on a mentoring program waiting list is due to the lack of mentors available, according to a new “State of Mentoring” survey of 74 mentoring programs in Minnesota. The study, commissioned by the Mentoring Partnership of Minnesota, found that twice as many females mentor than males. Subsequently, 29 percent of male youth wait one year or more before being matched with a mentor, compared to only 5 percent of female youth.

    The National Mentoring Partnership’s Board of Directors members proudly announced the 2013 Excellence in Mentoring in America awards last evening at a special reception and dinner at the Library of Congress — the kickoff event for the third annual National Mentoring Summit, which begins today. These awards were given to political leaders, corporations and individuals who have moved the needle on expanding quality youth mentoring in America.

  • January 2012 is the 11th annual National Mentoring Month

    January 2012 marks the 11th anniversary of National Mentoring Month, an annual media campaign to recruit volunteer mentors for young people. This year’s campaign slogan, “Invest in the Future, Mentor a Child,” focuses on mentoring as a strategy for boosting academic achievement and workforce readiness. In Minnesota, more than 270,000 young people could benefit from a mentoring relationship.

    Dr. Renée Spencer, Associate Professor at Boston University School of Social Work, and Dr. Jean Rhodes, Professor of Psychology at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, headline the 12th annual Minnesota Mentoring Conference: “Best in Class” hosted by the Mentoring Partnership of Minnesota (MPM). The conference will be held at the University of Minnesota's Continuing Education & Conference Center in Saint Paul. The researchers will discuss the quality of mentoring relationships and shed light on two provocative questions: "Doing Our Best: Is It Good Enough?" and "Which Youth Is Mentoring Best For?"
